Transform plate boundaries are common as offsets along mid-ocean ridges. They are very small compared to transform faults on land. The famous and very active San Andreas Fault zone of California is a transform faultwhich offsets a portion of the East Pacific Rise under southwestern United Statesand Mexico.

The motion of the fault generates numerous small earthquakes, at multiple times a day, most of which are too small to be felt. San Francisco Bay – Santa Clara Valley, lie in sta-ble or slowly down-dropping areas formed between the major faults, in this case the San Andreas, Hayward and Calavaras faults (Figure 1) (Page, ).
