The findings presented have important implications for sentence processing and cognitive processing models, and by extension contribute toward the Sentence processing in East Asian languages book of a universal theory of human language processing.

Mineharu Nakayama is a professor of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at The Ohio State University. Many believe that the creation of such a theory could possibly assist in the understanding of how the human brain works.

For this reason, much research has been performed on sentence processing in English and other Indo-European languages. Yet, East Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean have received little attention.

The languages of East Asia belong to several distinct language families, with many common features attributed to the Mainland Southeast Asia linguistic area, Chinese varieties and languages of southeast Asia share many areal features, tending to be analytic languages with similar syllable and tone structure.

In the 1st millennium AD, Chinese culture came to dominate East Asia. How scripts are processed and how sentences are read by native speakers and learners are also concerns in Mineharu Nakayama’s psycholinguistic research (e.g., Sentence Processing in East Asian Languages and Handbook of Japanese Psycholinguistics).
